On June 18, 2012, we said good-bye to Margaret Berg, 105, after a long, full and rewarding life among family and friends. Margaret was born in Logansport, Indiana on December, 23 1906; the fourth youngest in a family of 12 brothers and sisters born to Leonard and Myrtle (nee Hilton) Hughes. Margaret grew up near Chalmers, IN on a farm, attending a one room school house in rural Chalmers where she was the only student in first grade. Her chores on the farm included milking the cows, which learned from experience, must be milked from the correct side or they will kick the milk bucket. Her family moved to Oxford, IN and later to Lafayette, IN, where she attended Purdue University for a short period and met her future spouse on a blind date in 1934. She and Eugene Berg were married in 1939. They had 2 children; Chuck and Paula, but recently lost Paula to cancer in 2007. Margaret had spent the last 66 years in the Chicagoland area and for the last 48 years she resided in Lake Forest, IL. In addition to her 2 children, Margaret has five grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. Always generous of her time and funds, she became the volunteer’s volunteer for 27 years at Downey Veterans Hospital in North Chicago, where she organized the Swing Club of the North Shore to provide golf outings for the disabled veterans. Margaret remained active in the Garden Club, Women’s Club, Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest Circle 4, St. Mary’s Bridge Club, and Allendale Boy’s Club.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Eugene in 2005; her daughter, Paula; her sisters, Mary, Leila, Bessie, Helen, Harriet, Mabel, Katherine, Eleanore and Vera; her brothers, Sam and Frank. She is survived by her son, Chuck (Dian) and their sons, Donald (Ann) and Christian (Hilary) and Paula (Lee)’s children Lyndee, Leslie (Rick) and Eric (Joy).
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at later date.
