Katherine V. Szaflarski, (nee Steinhauer) 97, of Lake Bluff, IL, died July 10, 2018. Beloved wife of Louis Szaflarski, who preceded her in death, in 2009. Treasured mother of Karen (James) Ports of Colorado Springs, CO; Susan (Patrick) Vehlow of Libertyville, IL; the late Paul (deceased 1956); Mark (Monica O’Meara) Szaflarski of Oak Park, IL; David (Karyn) Szaflarski of Lake Forest, IL. Cherished Grandmother of Christine Basley, Jeffrey and Matthew Ports; Elizabeth and Jonathan Vehlow; and Emily and Anna Szaflarski. Great Grandmother of four.
Katherine’s love of her family as a wife and mother were foremost but she was also an avid gardener and lover of books. She created a beautiful sanctuary in her garden that was filled with an array of flowers all colors of the rainbow. Tending her garden, with her hands in the loamy earth and planting in the spring, was her personal heaven.
Her love of books was ever present. Books, books and more books, were in every room of her lovely home. From her reading of great literature (her favorites, Dickens, Austin, and Twain) she maintained an extensive vocabulary. Her favorite pastime was a good crossword puzzle which put her love of words to use in the evenings before bed. Her wry and witty sense of humor also reflected her love of language.
It’s hard in a few sentences to encapsulate the depth of someone so loved who had such a wonderful, meaningful life.
Cicero said it best. “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need”. In Katherine’s case, in her comfortable home and lovely garden, with her family around her, her needs were few.
