Obituary for Denis McDowell

Denis James McDowell – age 93, a 50 year resident of Lake Forest, IL passed away on May 18th, 2018. He was the Beloved Husband of 66 years to Murlyn J. McDowell (Deceased – 01/01/2017), Revered Father of sons Mark (Susan) and Scott, Adoring Grandfather of Alexander and Son of the late Thomas and Florence (Grady) McDowell. Denis was born on November 2nd, 1924 in Wauwatosa, WI and was raised there. After graduating from Wauwatosa High School in 1942, Denis enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp ( US Air Force) where he became a Navigator and was initially stationed (for training) in Pensacola, FL before being eventually stationed in St. Louis, MO., where he was involved in Air Reconnaissance Missions over the United States during World War II. After World War II, utilizing the GI Bill, Denis entered and graduated from Marquette University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. During his High School days, Denis met and dated Murlyn J. Scherr (McDowell) and after his graduation from Marquette married Murlyn on April 15th, 1950. Denis business career spanned over 42 years starting as a Salesman, then Office Sales Manager and finally Regional Sales Manager for various companies such as Honeywell, Fischer and Porter and Yokogawa whose product specialties included selling commercial process instrumentation and control systems integration. Denis and Murlyn spent 17 years of their married life (1951- 1967) living in Wauwatosa, WI (as they spent 1 year in Cleveland, OH in 1950), then in 1968 - Denis, Murlyn and 2 sons moved to Lake Forest, IL where he lived in the same residence until his death. Denis loved sports and was an avid golfer and tennis player particularly in his younger to middle aged years of his life. Additionally, he was long time member of the Lake Forest Health and Fitness Center of which he frequented regularly. He was a good provider to his immediate family and will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends. There will be a Memorial Service held in his honor on Saturday – June 9th, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, 700 N.
