Richard "Dick" Eser
Richard J. Eser "Dick", age 92, of Lake Forest, passed away January 30, 2018. He was the beloved husband of the late Peggy nee Abbott for over 62 years; loving father of Lynn (Bill) Bastian and Pam (Paul Rotmil) Eser, and dear grandfather of Alexandra and Kathleen. Born in Chicago in 1925 to Alexander and Margaret Eser, Dick grew up in Oak Park. He attended Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio while in the Navy V-12 Program, graduating with a BA in 1946. After the war, Dick attended Northwestern Law School, earning his JD. He pursued a career in insurance and reinsurance at Allstate Insurance. He started in 1951 as a Casualty Claims Adjuster, becoming District Claim Office Manager in 1960. From 1960 to 1967, he handled Commercial claims on national accounts. From 1967-68, he served as claim representative on the Commercial Task Force. From 1968-88, he joined the newly established reinsurance department, helping to establish policies and procedures, budgets and personnel. He conducted treaty and facultative claim audits and evaluated and resolved complicated claims and litigation, especially professional liability claims for accountants, lawyers and doctors. He worked closely with the legal department on arbitrations and testified as an expert witness. He supervised claims handling for insolvent Reinsureds under state-ordered rehabilitation or liquidation. He retired from Allstate in 1988. From 1990-92, he served as a reinsurance claims manager for the State of California on the Mission Insurance Companies’ Trusts liquidation. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending winters in Highland Beach, Florida, playing bridge and poker, listening to opera and music, and spending time with family and friends.
