Obituary for Jack Bohlen

Jack Raymond Bohlen, Passed away on October 8, 2017. Beloved husband of Alice (Schutte) Bohlen, and loving father of Judith (Jim) DiEgidio, Martha (Alan) Weston, and Ann (Steve) Troy. He will be missed by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Jack was the lead trumpeter for “Barney Bohlen and the Bombardiers” and soloed with “Sophisticated Lady.” After high school, Jack joined the United States Air Force and served at the Pentagon. Attending the University of Miami, Jack was President of the local chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha and a lifelong, supporter of the Miami Hurricanes. In fact, Jack held his football season tickets for 66 years, the longest consecutive season ticket holder in the Hurricanes’ history. But his greatest fortune at Miami was when he met the love of his life, Alice Schutte, to whom he was married for 66 years. Jack had a rewarding career in fundraising and philanthropy. With successes in healthcare, academia and consulting, he was recognized as a leader in his field, receiving the “Award for Excellence in Fundraising” from The National Society of Fundraising Executives. In retirement, Jack frequently volunteered his time and expertise to help smaller schools and charities, while serving as President of the Geneva Foundation benefitting Presbyterian Homes. As his friends know, Jack loved both his New England Patriots and Chicago “Cubbies” and he was thrilled to be able to see both teams secure championships this last year. Always witty and with a wry sense of humor, Jack had a twinkle in his eye and was happiest spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, sitting in the sun, tennis, all sports and playing poker with friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial service at 4p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017, in the Vail Room at Lake Forest Place, 1100 Pembridge Dr., Lake Forest, IL 60045. No Visitation, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Geneva Foundation of Presbyterian Homes in Jack’s memory, 1100 Pembridge Dr, Lake Forest, IL 60045.
