This is not so much of an obituary as it is a tribute to the most amazing husband, dad, grampy and friend who has ever walked this earth. Eugene Lonergan went to heaven on March 14th, 2017 at only 72. A Chicago police officer for 15 years, and a retired State Farm agent, he married Marcia (Homins) May 14th, 1977 and had two children together. Saturday night was spent surrounded by friends and family watching his grandsons fly at IFly, having a beer at the Haufbrau house, and singing at the top of his lungs Happy Birthday to one of his grandsons. He loved everyone he met, was always singing or whistling, drove his seniors at Dickenson Hall to wherever they needed to be, brought lunch to the people who work at the garbage dump in Lake Forest, pulled his tractor around on a trailer to mow his kid’s lawns, drove his surrey in countless parades, and took his grandsons everywhere. He lived for the moment, was always happy and having fun, liked to tease us all, and would be there for anyone in a second. He is survived by his wife Marcia, daughter Kim (Kevin) Shortsle, son Keith (Amanda) Lonergan and four amazing grandsons, Hayden, Griffin, Beckett and Declan. Gene would want one thing for sure, for us all to celebrate his life and remember all of the good times we were blessed to have together. His Irish eyes are smiling away. Visitation and burial was held at an earlier date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Senior Citizens Foundation, 100 East Old Mill Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045.
