Marilyn Mullen Rainer, formerly of Batavia, NY, died on March 10, 2017 in Lake Forest, IL following a short illness. Born in Batavia, NY, she was the daughter of Everett J. and Louise Mayer Mullen. A graduate of Batavia High School, Mrs. Rainer received a B.A. degree from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, OH and a M.A. degree from Mills College, Oakland, CA and did further graduate work at the University of Rochester, Canisius College and SUNY, Brockport. She was an educator, teaching middle school English and retiring as High School Guidance Counselor in Batavia, NY. She was active in the Episcopal Church, being a communicant at the Church of the Holy Spirit and formerly of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Attica, NY. She served several leadership roles in the parish and served on the Commissions of Ministry and Ordination for the Episcopal Diocese of Western NY. She was a charter member of the Genesee Memorial Hospital League, a member of the United Hospital Foundation and the Grand View Cemetery Board. She was also a member of the Genesee County Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are two daughters: Shauna (Delwyn) Gale Schafer of Huntsville, AL and Robin (Mike) Gale Zafirovski of Lake Forest, IL; 5 grandchildren, Meredith Schafer, Katie Schafer (Joe Indeck), Matt (Kali) Zafirovski, Kirk Zafirovski and Todd Zafirovski and 1 great-grandchild (Nicholas Riggins Zafirovski). She is also survived by her sister Sharon (David) Oaks, Ellicott City, MD, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by the Rev. Dr. Eligius G. Rainer, and her first husband, William M. Gale, and her brother, Richard C. Mullen. A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Lake Forest, IL at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2017. A graveside service will be held at Grand View Cemetery, Batavia, NY at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to either: Ann & Robert H.
